Assistant Director – Early Childhood Center

CHS Hershey – Hershey, PA

CHS Hershey will be CHS’s first center and is expected to open in 2023. The two-story, 50,827-square-foot building, located at the southwest corner of Governor Road and Homestead Road, will include a Family Resource Center, an innovation lab and an experiential learning garden. The center will accommodate 150 students from birth to age 5 and is expected to employ up to 80 employees and volunteers.

Role Description:

The CHS Hershey Assistant Director will serve as the center’s educational leader, responsible for overseeing the delivery of curriculum and maintenance of high-quality, safe, and nurturing classroom environments. The Assistant Director will lead and guide all members of the center’s educational staff including master teachers, lead teachers, assistant teachers, and classroom aides. This individual will report to the CHS Hershey Center Director, with whom the individual will work closely to shape the center agenda and culture. The Assistant Director will be responsible for supporting day-to-day operations and management of CHS Hershey and will assume full oversight of center operations in the Center Director’s absence. This individual will serve as a role model for administrators, teachers, and students at CHS Hershey and will guide staff in fulfilling the center’s mission and vision. 

Responsibilities include: 

  • The Assistant Director will support the Center Director by providing direct oversight of CHS Hershey’s teaching department including master teachers, teachers, assistant teachers, and aides. Responsibilities include: 
  • Assisting the Center Director in ensuring all center staff deliver high quality, child-centered education to students
  • Supporting the teaching team in the effective application of curriculum and classroom safety procedures
  • Ensuring classrooms and additional learning environments are properly equipped and maintained
  • Developing and maintaining teaching staff schedules
  • In collaboration with other departments, managing future classroom projections and coordinating enrollment opportunities with the Admissions team
  • Managing the execution and delivery of child developmental assessments
  • Supporting teachers and family engagement staff in providing timely, relevant, and engaging communication to families
  • Ensuring proper onboarding and ongoing training and development of teaching staff
  • Implementing policies and procedures to safeguard health and safety of families and staff in compliance with the State requirements (DHS/OCDEL) and NAEYC standards 
  • Providing direct reports with timely and constructive feedback through ongoing performance evaluations
  • In collaboration with other departments, optimizing daily operations and workflow management, and looking to resolve inefficiencies alongside the Center Director 
  • Building and maintaining positive relationships with all staff and encouraging center growth and performance 
  • Reporting to and working closely with the Center Director to achieve the mission and values of CHS  
  • Acting as a liaison to the CHS Central Office on any operational and strategic issues as necessary

Requirements include: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Elementary Education, Special Education or Human Services
  • 5 years’ experience in similar role 
  • PA Teacher Certification (Preferred)
  • Ability to effectively oversee a large department, multitask, and efficiently streamline operations 
  • Experience in people management and conflict resolution
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate collaborative working relationships with a variety of stakeholders, including parents, staff, and community partners
  • Able to hold teams accountable and ensure compliance to CHS requirements and procedures 
  • Organizational, collaborative, and confident in leadership a position of leadership
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills – written, verbal, and platform 
  • Proficiency in using technology, including MS Office Suite (including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
  • Background in Early Childhood Education field and/or programs (preferred)

About Catherine Hershey Schools for Early Learning

For more than 110 years, Milton Hershey School (MHS) has helped children realize their full potential by offering a top-notch private, cost-free education to students in pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade from income-eligible families. To expand and enhance the impact of Milton and Catherine Hershey’s vision, the Boards and management of Milton Hershey School and the Hershey Trust Company are launching the Catherine Hershey Schools for Early Learning (CHS), a cost-free, non-residential early childhood education program.

CHS plans to open six early childhood education Centers by 2027. The Centers are designed for children from birth to age 5 from economically disadvantaged and at-risk backgrounds with the goal of encouraging the development of a child’s educational, cognitive, social, emotional, and physical well-being. The CHS Initiative will provide a focus on core early learning programs through a rigorous and relevant curriculum that is aligned with a mission to nurture and educate enrolled children. Children also will receive supports such as nutritious meals and provisions of supplies, among other early learning enhancements.
